Interview with Taona Knights, Academic Director of EC Vancouver: “Studying abroad shows how to apply knowledge learnt in the classroom to real life”
TAONA KNIGHTS, ACADEMIC DIRECTOR OF EC VANCOUVER
Why should a student choose your school?
We take our students’ wellbeing and progress to heart and we go the extra mile to make sure they have the most productive and enjoyable experience possible while learning at our school.
In your opinion, which are the main benefits for a student to study abroad?
I think coming to a study aboard offers an opportunity to really experience learning a language in context and shows students how to apply knowledge learnt in the classroom to real life. I also believe it does wonders for the students’ confidence as they get to experience new cultures, foods and mingle with other international students.
How do you see the future of language tourism?
I think language tourism is here to stay and will remain similar to its current form, as it really is the best way to learn a language. However I anticipate that maybe we will see more virtual learning pre and post the actual trip in order to make the most of the learning experience.
What types of courses do you think will be most in demand in the future?
In my opinion we will see an increase in measurement tools such as exams and courses that validate a student’s particular level. I think this will be the case as students will want to prove that they have improved their language skills and have tangible outcomes from their experience.

The most significant things the school can offer
At EC, we offer a communicative learning approach which aims to give the students the tools they need to succeed in a global and multicultural world. We believe that the students should be at the center of the learning and we adapt to their needs and desired outcomes. In terms of facilities, we have interactive whiteboards to help support the students and spacious, bright classrooms. We also offer a student lounge area, computer room and library.

Attractions in the school’s surroundings and in the city in general
Vancouver is a beautiful city and it offers a wide variety of activities. Our school is centrally located close to the beach and near the mountains. Many of our students enjoy hoping on the ferry to go and explore the market near North Vancouver or escaping the city to go hike on one of the many hiking trails near Vancouver.
