Course start date and duration
DetailsCELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is an initial qualification for people with little or no previous teaching experience. It is a very intensive 4-week course with a strong practical component.A solid grounding is provided in teaching skills and techniques.Assessment is continuous, based on teaching practice and written assignments.Up to 7 courses are held per year (please check the price list for dates).
MethodologyThe course is broadly based on the Communicative Approach. There is a strong emphasis on student involvement in the learning process and trainees are encouraged to think in terms of learning, rather than teaching. Tutors keep up-to-date with the latest developments in language teaching, and feed this into the course.
Course ComponentsTeaching PracticeEach candidate will do 6 hours (8 to 9 lessons) of assessed teaching.Candidates may be given the opportunity to do unassessed teaching practice depending on how many candidates are enrolled on the course. Candidates are given guidance with lesson planning, and are then expected to produce a detailed plan and teach the lesson. After the lesson they get oral feedback from their peers as well as their tutor, who also provides them with detailed written feedback and a grade for that lesson.
Input SessionsThese cover, among other areas, lesson planning, classroom management, methodology, clarifying meaning and checking understanding, teaching pronunciation, and language skills (reading, writing, speaking). The tutors use these sessions to demonstrate a student-focussed approach.
Written AssignmentsThere are four assignments: focus on the learner, language-related tasks, skills-related tasks, and lessons from the classroom.
Observation of Experienced TeachersCandidates do a total of 6 hours of observation of qualified, experienced teachers, up to 3 hours of which may be video lessons.
