Purpose: The purpose of BEW is to prepare students to succeed in the world of business by assisting them in developing their English-language skills. Students focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening within the context of the business world, though the course focuses mostly on communication skills. Students study in BEW as an afternoon elective.In BEW, there is a strong focus on building accuracy and fluency through building the students’ lexical resource of vocabulary, expressions, idioms, and collocations. Also, the students learn many structures that they will use in their spoken and written production. In short, the students will gain the language skills they need to be able to participate successfully in any situation.The course is a practical application of concepts and current business practices. The class is based on communicative activities. The students work collaboratively on various projects, assignments, and role plays; this gives them teamwork skills that are crucial in the business world.

The purpose of the courses in English for Communication is to assist students in becoming effective communicators in English in a variety of real-life situations. Using an assortment of techniques such as community integration, team projects, formative assessments, interactive activities, self-assessments, peer evaluation, and teacher feedback, the students will learn practical language and vocabulary that will help them in any environment in which English is necessary, including—but not limited to—professional situations, educational settings, and international travel.The courses in EC focus on building students’ abilities in many different areas including accuracy, pronunciation, intonation, fluency, reciprocal conversation, negotiation, turn taking, presentation delivery, floor holding, and polite debate. Objectives depend on the class and level. The program also has subsidiary aims of building interpersonal skills, increasing cross-cultural awareness, and improving critical thinking skills. The students rely heavily on problem-solving and team-working skills in order to successfully meet the requirements of the program and each of its courses.

English for Parents (EP) is a three-level program aimed at providing parents of school-aged children with solid foundation English. In addition, EP helps parents learn the everyday English they need to thrive in Canadian society. Every Friday, students take part in a workshop which focuses on naturally and accurately using English in various situations students may encounter in Canada. Using different themes, the students will be given opportunities to practice the new language through role plays, discussions, presentations and outings.
