Our General English language courses are suitable for anyone, from beginner to advanced level. If you want to improve your English for academic, personal or professional use, whatever your reasons, we have a course for you. Choose the intensity of study to suit your needs. Develop the four skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening, and increase your awareness of how English works. You will also learn and revise new vocabulary, improve your pronunciation and polish your English grammar! This course follows the Standard course structure with an additional 4 lessons of communicative skills practice per week. These extra lessons are designed to give you the chance to develop your confidence in speaking and listening.

The General English Language Course develops your core language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) so that you can speak English confidently and apply practical English skills to communicate in everyday situations. Mercury Colleges uses the most up to date curriculum and incorporates eLearning for interesting activities and practice. Along your journey towards learning English as a second language, our highly experienced and qualified teachers will introduce you to a world of famous people, global art and architecture, music, and an array of cultures. You are sure to meet your learning goals and have a lot of enjoyable times in your class with your new group of international friends. Our General English courses are suitable forstudents from Elementary through to Advanced level.

Our General English Language courses aim to improve every aspect of your English so that you can communicate effectively with speakers from across the globe. Our approach is to provide a stimulating and highly interactive environment in which you can develop your language skills. Lesson content concentrates on speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Every week you will work on developing and improving all language skill areas, with a focus on active communication in real life situations. You will also be given regular homework and weekly tests to check your progress. The 4 daily classes of 60 minutes will take place in the time slots that are detailed below. The exact timetable is assigned on the first day of class, depending on your level: Mornings: 9:30 - 12:45 and Afternoons: 14.00 - 17:15.

Studying a General English course will give you an understanding of the English language and take you all the way from beginner to fluency. This course focuses on communication skills, speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Our Semi-Intensive English course is a semi-intensive programme that allows you to balance classroom tuition with structured study and free time activities. You will improve your English language ability at a speed you feel comfortable with, while having time to enjoy your destination.This course is available at all levels from Elementary to Advanced and you will be placed in a class which is suitable for your level. The course focuses on the four main aspects of language: reading, writing, listening and speaking. You’ll also learn vocabulary and grammar, and how to speak in formal and informal discussions and strategies.

This General English language course is suitable for students who wish to improve their fluency, vocabulary and pronunciation in a language. There is an emphasis on language for everyday situations and classes may involve discussing topics such as film and theatre, current events, politics, local culture and the internet. 10 lessons per week; 1 lesson: 50 minutes; 15 Students maximum per class; Course length: 1-11 weeks; Hours per week: 8 hours 20 minutes; Ages 16+.

On the General English 20 Course, you attend a core of 20 lessons per week (15 hours), which will give you a practical understanding of the English language and take you all the way to fluency. Your confidence will improve as we train you in all four communication skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

By following a General English group course of 20 lessons per week, you will develop your core language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and improve your general level of English and understanding in all areas of language knowledge. This means that you study and improve grammar in context, expand your vocabulary around everyday topics and improve your pronunciation. By the end of your course, you can expect to be a more confident and fluent user of English. 

Our ESL classes are based on a unique UMC Model that maximizes student-teacher interaction and communicative learning when studying English. Designed and created in UMC, our unique techniques and activities used in the classroom are designed to develop both fluency AND accuracy with the ultimate goal of language production. Each lesson is allocated to different skills such as listening strategies, vocabulary development, reading, writing skills, pronunciation, fluency improvement and so on. That maximizes our 4-week terms and allows you to focus on the core skills you need to become proficient. UMC has official start dates every 4 weeks in Toronto.

This General English language course is made up of 30 lessons (22.5 hours) per week including the General English classes. It also allows you to personalise your course by taking 10 lessons per week across a wide selection of Special Focus options.
