Official English exams

  • TOEFEL / Test of English as Foreign Language

These exams are very common in American English and are necessary for a foreigner to be admitted to a large majority of American universities.

The exam evaluates written comprehension and oral comprehension. It also includes listening exercises.

The levels vary depending on the score obtained in the exam. A low score would be a score of 2 and a high score a score of 5. In the case of TOEFL computer-based tests, scores range from 40 to 300 points. In the case of TOEFL paper-based tests, scores range from 310 to 677.

  • FCE / First Certificate in English (Cambridge)

This is one of the official Cambridge University exams. The First Certificate in English is the most common and best-known exam taught by the University of Cambridge, which examines¨General British English¨. It includes written comprehension, oral comprehension and listening comprehension.

In addition to being the most well-known, it is the most popular since it is a title that guarantees that you have reached an intermediate level of English.

  • CAE / Certificate in Advance English (Cambridge)

After the First, this certificate is one of the best known certifications from the University of Cambridge. The exam evaluates oral, written and listening skills in English, and is considered a very complete exam.

This certification corresponds to level 4 of the Cambridge exams that tests General British English, and is therefore an advanced level of English. If you want to certify that your level of English is advanced, this is the required certification.

The level would be the equivalent of a C1 in the range of European levels.

  • CPE / Certificate in Proficiency in English

This certification is considered the highest level at the University of Cambridge. This is the 5th level at Cambridge and its exam consists of an oral, written and listening assessment.

The Certificate in Proficiency in English will certify your level to be able to be admitted to a British university. It will also certify your level by Cambridge as a level above the advanced level

The level is the equivalent of a C2 in the European framework, which is considered a very high level of level 5.

If you want to obtain the highest level by the University of Cambridge that examines your ¨General British English¨, this is the officially recognized certification.

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

The International English Language Testing System known as IELTS, is a widely recognized exam that can guarantee admission to universities around the world. The exam includes listening, writing and listening comprehension.

The levels in the IELTS vary from low (level 2) to very high (level 5), corresponding with the score obtained. These levels would be the equivalent to A2 and C2 as stipulated in the European framework.

The results in the scores can range from 1 to 9, with 6.5 being the minimum score that must be obtained to be admitted by the universities.

  • ESOL by Pitman / English for Speakers of Other Languages

These exams include an oral and a written section. ESOL exam levels are based on the common European framework ranging from A1 to C2.

These are the levels offered by the ESOL exam by Pitman:

    • Preliminary A1 (Breakthrough): Preliminary, equivalent to a basic level.
    • Access A2 (Waystage): Access, equivalent to a basic-intermediate level.
    • Achiever B1: (Threshold): Achiever, equivalent to an intermediate level.
    • Expert C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency): Expert, equivalent to a high advanced level.
    • Mastery C2 (Teacher Level): Mastery, equivalent to the highest level for teaching.

  • TOEIC / Test of English for International Communication

This type of exam is focused on the use of international English and professional English. The exam contains oral expression and written comprehension.

The levels range from low (level 2) to very high (level 5), depending on the score obtained. The levels correspond to A2 up to C2 if we use the European framework levels as a reference.

The TOEIC test has scores ranging from 10 to 990 points.

  • BEC / Business English Certificate (Cambridge)

If you are interested in business or want to be able to survive in the business world in English, the Business English Certificate exam is perfect for you. The BEC examines language skills in the business environment at all levels. This exam contains spoken, written and listening parts.

The BEC exam consists of 3 levels that are divided into:

BEC1 / Preliminary: Basic Level (2)

BEC2 / Vantage: Intermediate Level (3)

BEC3 / Higher: Advanced Level (4)

The BEC levels corresponds to a B1 to a C1 if the were compared to the levels stipulated in the European framework.

  • GMAT / Graduate Management Admission Test

GMAC is the owner and administrator of the GMAT™ exam. The exam is taken on a Laptop or PC, and is very useful for those who want to complete a postgraduate degree in Administration, an MBA, a Master in Accounting or a Master in Finance. Many universities specialized in business use this exam for their admission criteria. The Graduate Management Admission Test will assess a person’s reading, quantitative, writing, analysis, and listening skills in Standard English.

The levels go from Low (level 2) to very high (level 5) depending on the score obtained in the GMAT. These levels correspond to the levels that go from A2 to C2, which are the levels stipulated in the European framework and their scores determine the level range from 20 to 60 points.

  • TWE / Test of Written English

This is an exam essentially on writing, which focuses on the written skills of American English.

The levels in this type of exam vary from a Low level with a score of 2 to a very high level with a score of 5. These scores correspond to the scores that range from A2 to C2.

The results for determining low (2) or high (5) levels of English have the same scores as the TOEFL tests. Computer based test 40-300 Points and Paper Based Test 310 – 677.

  • TELC / European Language Certificates

These exams of European origin are standard international exams that allow you to take the tests in more than 10 different languages. The TELC is a test that comes from TELC GmbH and belongs to the DVV (Association for Adult Education in Germany).

The exam is available in the following languages: English, German, Spanish, Italian, Turkish, French, Arabic and Portuguese.

These are the levels of the European Language Certificates:

    • CIC I : Intermediate (3)
    • CIC A: Advanced (4)

These levels correspond to the levels that range from B1 to B2 level if we compare them with the levels stipulated in the European framework.

Official German exams

  • TestDaF / Test für Deutsch als Fremdsprache:

Test of German as a Second Language. This test is very useful for admissions to German universities since the TestDaF is recognized by all colleges and universities of higher studies in Germany. Originally, the test was intended to create a standard entrance test to access German universities. The TestDaF exam includes written, oral and spoken comprehension tests.

TestDaF levels range from intermediate (level 3) to advanced (level 4). These levels correspond to the levels that go from B2 to C1 if we compare them with the levels stipulated in the European framework.

  • Goethe Zertifikat B1 

The official German Goethe Institute offers 6 different exams consisting of different tests, depending on your level. Among these exams, the most popular are: Zertifikar Deutsch and Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung. These exams allow you to certify your level of German with a test that evaluates your written, listening and speaking skills.

The Zerficat B1, also known as the Zertificat Deuthsch, is the equivalent of an intermediate level (level 3) that corresponds to a B1, as compared with the language levels in the European framework.

  • Goethe Zertifikat C1:

This is the type of certificate that is normally requested by all German universities in order to access higher education and university studies. Please note that most universities in Germany accept the Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung in order to access and be accepted as a student. Additionally, a presentation demonstrating the fluency of the German language with the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für die Hochschule is required for each university.

The Goethe Zertifikat C1 exam is the equivalent of an advanced level (level 4). The levels of the Goethe Zertifikat Deutsch range from A1 to C2 compared with the language levels stipulated in the European framework.

Official French exams

  • TCF / Test de Connaisance du Français

This exam will allow you to certify your French proficiency skills to officially determine your level of French. The TCF is one of the most recognized exams by the French Ministry of Education. The test includes oral, written and spoken comprehension tests.

The levels of the TCF, Test of Knowledge of French range from level A1 to level C2 as compared with those used within the European framework.

  • DELF / Diplome d`Etude de Langue Francaise  & DALF / Diplome Approfondi de Langue Francaise

These 2 exams go hand in hand since the DALF exam is based on the DELF exam and is required for all those who want to pursue their university studies in France. The DELF and DALF exams are the most important in the French language. In these tests, oral, written and listening comprehension are evaluated.

DELF levels correspond to a low and medium level (level 2 and level 3), whilst DALF levels correspond to a high level (level 4). The DELF exams would be the equivalent of level A1 and B2, and the DALF exams would be the equivalent of C1 and C2, if we were to compare them to the levels set out in the European framework.

  • DELE / Exam of the Instituto Cervantes / University Salamanca

The official exam of the Instituto Cervantes is carried out in collaboration with the University of Salamanca and the Spanish Ministry of Education. The exam consists of an oral, written and spoken comprehension test and is subdivided into 3 levels that go from the initial level to the higher level.

  • CILS / Certificazione di Italiano como Lingua Straniera

This is an official and government accepted exam. The test consists of 6 levels and is organized by the Siena University for Foreigners. The CILS exam includes the assessment of the Italian level in the oral, spoken and written form.

The levels of the CILS Certificate of Italian as a Foreign Language range from low level (level 2) to high level (level 5).

The level results will depend on the score obtained in the CILS test. The score results range from 55 to 100 points.

  • CELI/ Exams of Universita per Stranieri di Perugia – Certificato di Conoscenza della Lingua Italiana

The Perugia Foreign University Exam contains tests to demonstrate your speaking skills, written comprehension and oral comprehension.

The levels of the CELI exam range from basic level (level 1) to a very advanced level (level 5). The levels of the Stranieri di Perugia university would be equivalent to an A1 up to a C2 if we were to compare them with the levels set out in the European framework.

Official Chinese exams

  • Official HSK Chinese Level 1 Exam

The official Chinese language exam HSK level 1 corresponds to a basic level. The test includes reading and listening comprehension. The time limit to complete the HSK level 1 exam is 40 minutes.

In the official Chinese HSK exam there are different levels:

    • HSK level 1
    • HSK level 2
    • HSK level 3
    • HSK level 4
    • HSK level 5
    • HSK level 6

The levels of this exam are determined by the score obtained in the exam. The exam has a scoring range from 0 to 200 points.

To achieve the basic level in HSK, students must obtain a minimum of 120 points.

At HSK Level 1, it is the equivalent of an A1, according to the level classification stipulated in the European framework.

  • Official HSK Chinese Level 2 Exam

The official Chinese language exam HSK level 2 corresponds to an intermediate-low level. The exam includes reading and listening comprehension. The time limit for completing the HSK level 2 exam is 50 minutes.

The level of this exam is determined by the score obtained in the exam. The exam has a scoring range from 0 to 200 points.

To reach the lower intermediate level in HSK, students must obtain a minimum of 120 points.

  • Official Chinese HSK Level 3 Exam

The HSK level 3 test corresponds to an intermediate level. This official Chinese language exam includes listening comprehension, reading comprehension and written comprehension tests. The time limit for completing the HSK level 3 exam is 90 minutes.

The HSK level 3 test is determined by the score obtained in the exam. The exam has a scoring range from 0 to 300 points.

To pass the exam with an intermediate level at HSK level 3, a minimum of 180 points must be obtained.

  • Official HSK Chinese exam level 4

The HSK level 4 test corresponds to an intermediate-high level. This exam has a time limit of 105 minutes. The Level 4 HSK exam includes listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and written comprehension tests.

The maximum score in the official HSK 4 exam is 300 points with a minimum required score of 180 to pass the exam certifying the intermediate-high level in Chinese.

The HSK 4 level is the equivalent of a B2 as compared with the classification of language levels set out in the European framework.

  • Official HSK Chinese exam level 5

The HSK level 5 exam corresponds to a high level in the Chinese language. The student has 125 minutes to complete the exam. The exam has tests in reading comprehension, listening comprehension and written comprehension.

The HSK level 5 exam requires a minimum score of 180 points to pass the exam and 300 points is the maximum that can be achieved.

This certification demonstrates a high fluency in understanding the Chinese language and is the equivalent of a C1, as compared with the language levels stipulated in the European framework.

  • Official HSK Chinese exam level 6

The HSK level 6 exam is the highest level of the Chinese language tests. This level is sufficient for teachers or masters in Chinese. The maximum time to finish the exam is 140 minutes.

The HSK level 6 test has a maximum score of 300 points with a minimum score of 180 points required to pass the exam.

This certification guarantees a practically bilingual command of the Chinese language that is suitable for teaching. The HSK level 6 of Chinese is the equivalent of a C2 if we compare it with the language levels stipulated in the European framework.

  • Official Chinese YCT and Oral YCT exams

    • The YCT Chinese Official Exam

There are 3 levels of exams and the YCT oral exam has 2 levels ranging from elementary to intermediate.

In the YCT, the 4 levels of examination will depend on the score obtained in the tests. The exam from YCT level 1 to YCT level 3 consists of listening comprehension and reading comprehension tests. In the case of the YCT 4 exam, the tests will be listening, reading comprehension and written comprehension.

This is the classification of the YCT levels and the time limits set for each exam:

      • YCT level 1 (basic): maximum time of 35 minutes to complete the test
      • YCT level 2 (intermediate): maximum time of 50 minutes to complete the test
      • YCT level 3 (medium-high): maximum time of 60 minutes to complete the test
      • YCT level 4 (high level): maximum test time of 85 minutes to complete the test

The scores in the YCT tests range from YCT level 1 to YCT level 3 range from 120 (minimum score to pass) to 200 points (maximum score).

Due to its greater complexity, the score for the YCT level 4 test ranges from the 180 minimum points required to pass the test to 300 points, the latter being the highest score in the test.

    • Official Chinese YCT oral exam

This exam consists of only 2 levels, ranging from the elementary oral YCT to the intermediate oral YCT level.

At the elementary oral YCT level, the exam consists of oral tests that include answering questions, repeating sentences and describing photographs. The maximum score is 100 points and the time limit to complete the oral test is 19 minutes.

At the intermediate oral YCT level, the exam has more complex tasks with tests to answer questions, repeat sentences and speak on 2 topics. The maximum time to complete this test is 21 minutes.

  • Official HSKK Chinese Exam:

This exam consists of 3 different levels. The majority of the exam is oral and also includes a reading part at its highest level (HSKK Advanced level).

These are the levels of the official Chinese HSKK exam:

    • HSKK elementary level: the exam consists of 3 parts in your test to demonstrate the oral skills that include repeating sentences, answering questions and speaking on 2 topics.

This exam has a maximum score of 100 points and it is required to pass the test a minimum of 60 points. The maximum time to finish the test is 20 minutes.

    • HSKK intermediate level: the intermediate level exam consists of oral ability tests that include: repeating sentences, answering questions and speaking on 2 topics.

The HSKK intermediate level test has a total time of 23 minutes and just like the elementary level exam to pass the test, a minimum of 60 points is required and a maximum grade of 100 can be achieved.

    • HSKK advanced level: this exam requires a greater knowledge of the Chinese language. The HSKK advanced level also examines reading comprehension. The parts of the test contain: repetition of texts, reading and answering questions.

The maximum duration of the HSKK advanced level exam is 25 minutes. The maximum score that can be obtained in the exam is 100 points and to pass the test, a minimum of 60 points is required.

  • Chinese BTC Official Exam

This exam is focused on the world of business and companies. The tests are classified into 2 levels, focused both on oral and written comprehension.

The maximum score in both tests is 100 points and the levels in the BTC exam are:

    • BTC level A: with a maximum time to complete the exam of 60 minutes.
    • BTC level B: a maximum time to complete the exam of 110 minutes.

Both exams have 3 parts: listening, reading and writing.

Official Japanese exams

  • JLPT Japanese Official Exam, also known as the Japanese Language Proficiency or Nihongo nōryoku shiken

    日本語能力試験 Official Japanese Language Level Test?)

The JLPT is an official Japanese exam to certify the ability and understanding of the Japanese language.

The JLPT test is carried out twice a year, normally in July and December although you must bear in mind that the July exam may not be available in every country.

The exam is managed by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, and are authorized entities.

The official Japanese exam has 5 levels and tests of language comprehension, text comprehension and listening comprehension.

The scores for each level are 180 points for each test as the maximum mark in the exam. Depending on the results, the level of Japanese acquired will be certified.

    • JLPT Level 1 – This level corresponds to the basic level. The test is carried out in a maximum time of 170 minutes.
    • JLPT Level 2 – This test corresponds to an intermediate-basic level. The test is carried out in a maximum time of 155 minutes.
    • JLPT Level 3 – The exam corresponds to an intermediate level in which the understanding of the Japanese language is higher. The test includes more complex parts of vocabulary and comprehension. The maximum time to take the exam is 140 minutes.
    • JLPT level 4 – This test corresponds to an advanced level. The maximum time to take the exam is 125 minutes.
    • JLPT Level 5– This exam corresponds to a very advanced level. The maximum time for the examination is 105 minutes.

Official Portuguese exams

  • PLE / Português Língua Estrangeira de Portugal

The examination of Portuguese as a foreign language of Portugal is managed by the Camoes Institute.

  • CELPE – Bras / Certificado de Proficiência em Língua Portuguesa para Estrangeiros de Brasil

The Portuguese Language for Foreigners of Brazil certificate is an exam that is directly administered by the Brazilian Ministry of Education.

In Spain, there is the possibility of examining at the Colegio Mayor Casa do Brasil that belongs to the UCM, Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Other centers where the CELPE – Bras test is also performed are the Center for Brazilian Studies in Barcelona or at the University of Salamanca itself.

The exam is subdivided into 2 tests, written comprehension and oral comprehension. The CELPE written comprehension exam is taken one day before the oral comprehension exam.

To pass the Portuguese Language Test for Foreigners in Brazil, a minimum of 2 points out of 5 is required. The exam has a minimum age of 16 for all those who wish to take the test.

Official Arabic exams

Currently, there is no official exam that certifies the level of Arabic language internationally.

However, at this time there are various recognized Arabic languages that are taught in different institutions:

Apart from these recognized Arabic language types, there are many more dialects that are not usually taught in institutions.

At the EOI (Official Language School) there are Arabic language exams to certify the level of languages, but it is not an official exam.

The Arabic Institute, the Fundación Tres Culturas of Sevilla or the arabic houses inMadrid and Córdoba are other recognized institutions that teach the Arabic language and certify the level of Arabic.

Official Korean exams

  • TOPIK / Test of Proficiency in Korean (hangul: 한국어능력시험hanja: 韓國語能力試驗)

The Proficiency test in Korean is the official Korean language exam par excellence. This exam can be done in Korea and in other foreign countries. The TOPIK test of Korean language is administered by the NIED ¨National Institute for International Education¨ (National Institute for International Education).

In Korea, the TOPIK can be taken in the following months: November, January, April, July and October.

In foreign countries, the TOPIK can be taken in April and October.

The TOPIK / Test Of Proficiency in Korean distinguishes between 2 levels TOPIK 1 and TOPIK 2. These levels are in turn divided into more sub-levels.

    • TOPIK I: The Korean TOPIK I exam has a maximum duration of 100 minutes, of which 40 minutes are for a listening comprehension test and the remaining 60 minutes are for a written comprehension test. This includes level 1 (basic or elementary level) and level 2 (intermediate basic level).
    • TOPIK II: The Korean TOPIK II test has a maximum duration of 180 minutes of which 60 minutes are for a listening comprehension test, 70 minutes are for a written comprehension test and 50 minutes are for a written expression test . TOPIK II consists of the following levels: Level 3 (Intermediate), Level 4 (Intermediate Advanced), Level 5 (Advanced), and Level 6 (Expert).

Official Russian exams

  • TRKI or CRLE / Official Examination of Russian as a Foreign Language in Russian
    Тест по русскому языку как иностранному or ТРКИ and in English also known as Test of Russian as a Foreign Language or TORFL. In the Spanish language, the official Russian exam is known as the Certificate of Russian as a Foreign Language or CRLE.

The Official TORFL / CRLE Russian Exam is an exam that is passed and supervised by the Ministry of Education and Science in Russia. This exam has 3 annual dates depending on the country in which you examine.

The TORFL or CRLE structure is divided into different parts that examine the following sections: Vocabulary and grammar, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written ability and oral ability.

The TORFL / CRLE (Certificate of Russian as a Foreign Language) levels are:

    • Elementary
    • Basic
    • First Level
    • Second Level
    • Third level
    • Fourth Level

If we compare the different levels of the CRLE or TORFL test with the levels stipulated within the European framework, the Elementary level would be the equivalent of an A1 and the fourth level would be the equivalent of a C2.
