Interview with Karl Sammut, Sales and Marketing Director of Gateway School of English: “Students not only learn the language but also get to see the world’s diversity.”

Karl Sammut, Sales and Marketing Director, Gateway School of English

Why would a student choose your school?

Great mix of nationalities, GSE is very well known for having a lot of different nationalities in both classrooms as well as bedrooms.
Excellent academic team that is dedicated, professional and sees the specific needs of each and every student.
Accommodation right next to the school, only 2 minutes from bedroom to classroom; both the school and residence are located in an elegant and peaceful villa area in St Julian’s only 12 minutes’ walk from St Julian’s bay – Malta’s most popular tourist area with plenty of cafes , restaurants and hotels.

In your opinion, what are the main benefits for a student to study abroad?

Students not only learn the language but also get to see the world’s diversity which will help them in their future careers especially in a world that is becoming more globalised and international. The fact that students study in an international environment also helps them to acquire communicative skills which will certainly help them in their future workplaces and their dealings with international colleagues, customers and clients.
For the younger students who travel individually this is an opportunity to experience a certain degree of independence from their parents and thus grow as a more independent person having to fend for oneself while abroad.

How do you see the future of language tourism?

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic I think the language travel industry remains resilient and students of all ages would still want to travel for a language course post pandemic. I believe language travel is a lifetime experience that students cherish and remember for the rest of their lives.

What types of courses do you think will be most in demand in the future?

Business English and Professional English courses especially English for specific purposes such as Aviation English, Legal English, Medical English, English for Tourism and other ESP courses.

We have also seen an increase in demand for Exam preparation courses such as IELTS and TOEFL for employment purposes or university admission.
